Urchinpaw

Dreams don't last forever...
Eventually you have to wake up.

Urchinkit, a litter of one, was born, a small scrap in the large nest. and when he took his first breath... His mother took her last. Tidepool died during childbirth, much to the dismay of her many children and devoted mate.
A LITTER
OF ONE
Urchinkit's father was a very strong warrior! He wasn't afraid of anything and always dashed in first and asked questions later; anything to protect his family and clanmates. His mother was known for her kindness and nurturing nature, having not only given birth to many kits over the years but also fostered kits without parents or access to milk. In the eyes of onlookers they were living the dream, a perfect pair protecting and providing for the clan... But dreams don't last forever.... Eventually you have to wake up.

After Tidepool's death Urchinkit was brought up by a foster mother in the nursery alongside their own litter. His parent's past children, his older siblings, were divided on how to deal with their feelings about the loss of their mother and Urchinkit. Most of them were brought even closer, banding together during this hard time and watching out for their new baby brother. But there were a couple of them that kept their distance; likely harboring feelings of anger for him, seeing him as the cause of their mother's death...
But he only saw his family when they visited him in the nursery because most of his time there he spent with his denmates, now honorary siblings due to the circumstances. He never felt very close to any of them, he couldn't explain it, he just had this feeling that he was different even before he knew that this Queen and their kits weren't his real family. But there was one kit who seemed to always be up to something... Marlinkit! Urchinkit spent a lot of time trying to hold him back or just sit fretfully in the nest wondering if the scallywag would get caught! After all he was practically an accomplice! He usually knew beforehand what he was up to since the scoundrel always tried to rope him in! Didn't he know how scary it was outside the den!?
Little did they know the two of them were about to see how scary it was indeed. Sometime between 2-3 months of age a disasterous storm tore through the clans at the base of the mountain, hitting Stormclan very hard forcing them to evacuate their territory and take shelter with Treeclan. Urchinpaw could barely tell what was going on around him! It was pitch black, cats were yowling, some in pain others in fear, his fur was plastered to his body by the rain and he was freezing; it was absolutely terrifying for young kit. When they finally arrived in Treeclan he and the other kits were fussed over and licked dry before falling quickly to sleep; it was an exhausting day. He remembers the sounds in the darkness but he has few memories of Treeclan territory, due to the panic in and around him. When they came back to their own territory it took almost a month for Urchinkit to shake off the incident; every little sound scared him, especially at night. This coupled with his already timid nature made it hard for him to sleep even during the day. Luckily Marlinkit was around; he wasn't afraid of anything!
Urchinkit started to see Marlinkit differently, as a sort of brother; sure he was a source of constant worry but he was also there for him when he needed him: If he woke up scared at night, if he couldn't bring himself to try something new, whether it was to calm him down or to just be present. Even if it was tough love, he appreciated it.
As the days went by the Urchinkit's fear of the storm began to fade, he became a little more thoughtful, having had a lot of time kept awake at night to just be with himself. Sometimes he would sit alone, staring at nothing, thinking about something that he was missing; he was grateful for his foster mother's care and his honorary siblings but part of him ached to know what his biological mother looked like, acted like, sounded like. He had heard plenty of stories about her when his kin visited him but it just never felt like enough... How could you miss someone you've never even met? It was an odd feeling...
When the day finally came for Urchinkit to be apprenticed he felt like mites were crawling all over his pelt. He was terrified! Unlike Marlinkit who was sitting there looking like he was Starclan's gift to the clan! How could he be so confident? They were about to go outside the nursery! Again! And this time for good! What if he got a bad mentor? What if he was a disgrace to his family? What if he died on day one!? His father had obviosly noticed his tense body language because he padded over and put one of his big paws on his head. He told him he'd be fine and that they were all there for him if he needed them. His father paused gazing into his son's eyes, and Urchinkit remembers the look he gave him to this day, a very prideful but sad expression. He wished mom was here to see this... He returned his father's sad look and was surprised when he was then presented with a beautiful shell; It was a cream color with soft brown speckles smattering the surface. He told him that it was one of the shells that had been in the nest the day he was born and Tidepool had been planning to give it to him as a gift on the day of his apprentice ceremony. Urchinkit was beside himself. something from his mother?! It was right there. He could touch it!
... It couldn't replace his mother but this meant a lot to him. He placed it in his new nest in the apprentices den as soon as he was able, and he was sure she was watching over him.

PERSONALITY
+ Behaved
Urchinpaw tries to always follow the rules, whether it be the requests of his family or the code of their clan. He wouldn't want to get on any cats bad side! Sometimes his friends find him to be a stick in the mud because of this.
+ Compassionate
Urchinpaw can be a little selfish someties when it comes to letting his fear dictate his actions, but no one could say that he isn't compassionate. He feels deeply and is empathetic to others and will help other others in need.

= Fretful
Urchinpaw worries about everything! Are they following the rules? Is the tide coming in? What was that sound? Do sharks come on land? Some of these worries are baseless or the wild imagination of a chil, but it can also come in handy; sometimes you need to ask yourself if what you're doing is dangerous! Some cats are too reckless.
= Hesitant
Due to his fretful personality Urchinpaw tends to take his sweet time commiting to every little thing, whether it be a jump over a tide pool, trying a new move, leaving the nest, anything! Someday this may get him in trouble; there are definitely moments when you should take your time but there's also plenty of times when a situation requires action!
- Cowardly
Urchinpaw knows that he's in training to become a warrior, a cat who should be an example of the heroes before him, but he finds it hard to envision himself like that. He often finds himself to be too scared to try new things or stand up to others. It has been pointed out to him before that he is too dependant on others and, while it's harmless for now, as a warrior?... He just hopes he can someday find it in himself to do what needs to be done.
- Pessimist
Urchinpaw has a hard time seeing the bright side of a situation and paired with his fretful nature this can easily make him spiral into a lengthly list of worries. When he gets like this it's hard to get him out of it but he's got plenty of shoulders to lean on for now.
